Lunar New Year Wreath

Objective: Design a paper-cut wreath for the Lunar New Year using motifs and imagery from the culture of your choice.

Solution: I chose to represent my Cambodian heritage in this project using my own illustrations. The top text (suor sdey chnam thmey) means "Happy New Year", and the bottom text means 2022 in Khmer. The wreath features Apsara dancers, lotus flowers, and tigers for the Year of the Tiger. The centre image is based on a real carving from Angkor Wat.

Notes

All the paper was glued to a circular wooden base with double sided tape and foam tape. Cutting guidelines were made by printing the artwork backwards, then gluing it onto the coloured paper. One of my biggest challenges was figuring out how to layer my pieces to achieve a three dimensional effect... and sore fingers!
