The Bamboo Stage

Project type: Industrial Design

Objective: Design and build a luminous object with corresponding construction documents.

Solution: I was inspired by the bamboo stalk from Studio Ghibli's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. All the pieces for my object are made of laser-cut plywood (1/4" and 1/8") and one plexiglas disc. It was built to accomodate an LED lightbulb from IKEA.

Notes

This project was time consuming but very rewarding. The most challenging part was figuring out the size of the "gear notches" in which the leaves would be placed. They had to be almost exactly 1/8" thick: too large and the leaves would fall out. Too thin and the leaves wouldn't fit. And since I had to stack a whole bunch of these gear-like discs to form a cylinder, the notches had to all line up perfectly. I didn't quite get there, and wound up breaking one of my leaf stems in the process. But I was able to mend it!

All the piece outlines were drawn in Illustrator and taken to a laser-cutter for processing.
